Dinner and a movie on a Saturday night is the classic date. With prices these days, it can run anywhere between $50-$100. That's a lot to blow on a random Saturday - especially when you're married!
Enter our alternative: Italian subs at the drive-in. Not only did we save on dinner, we got to see two movies for $20/car. The savings compound when you double date!
What a neat idea your "Twist on a Classic" is JvW, I might even know the name of the drive-in you went to. Since you're working so hard on your budget, and doing a great job I might add, I thought I'd suggest another "Twisted Classic" that you and your hubby might enjoy.
The place is called Route One Cinema Pub and is located in North Attleboro MA (google it). As the name suggests, it's a theatre you can go to and have dinner WHILE you watch a movie. It's quite unique! They have tables all lined up right inside the theatre, surrounded by nicely padded swiveling chairs that (I think) even lean back. Granted the movies aren't first run, but if there's a recent movie that you missed or one that you liked and want to see again, this is a fun (and cheap) place to do it.
As far as the food goes, in addition to the usual popcorn, ice cream and candy found in all theatres, they also have appetizers, pizza, burgers, chicken, subs and even fish (don't have the pizza BTW) and you can wash it all down with soda, beer or wine. By now you're probably thinking "This is all well and good, but what about the prices?” To me, the prices are quite reasonable. The movie tickets are $5 at all times, the appetizers range from $3.50 - $6.99, most of the meals are $6.99 (none higher than $8.50) and the drinks vary depending on what you get.
With prices like these a dinner and a movie won't break your budget, and (as you'll see below) if you're "not too hungry" and don't mind sharing an appetizer, you can end up with one of those CHEAP DATES you're always looking for.
For ONLY $27.99 you get 2 movie tickets ($10), 1 appetizer to split ($6.99) and a 60oz pitcher of Bud or Bud Light ($11), NOT BAD if you ask me!
So if you haven't already done so and it's not too far from where you live, try the Route One Cinema Pub....you might just like it.
I am a new mom with a horrible memory, so I'm chronicling our journey into parenthood. My husband and I changed our lives forever on September 23, 2010 when we welcomed our baby girl into the world.
I also write a personal finance blog about getting out of debt and living on a budget. Check out my story at www.thegoodlifeonabudget.com

Anon - upon reading this, my husband said "That's kinda my dream - movies and beer! Can we go now?"
It's going on the list! Thanks for the suggestion.
